If 100% of gay people claim that they were born gay, I can’t understand why a straight person would have the audacity to tell them otherwise. I can’t understand the ground with which you would hold that opinion. If you remove the aspect of religion (which I will get back to later), there is nothing that you have to lean on but ignorance. So why? Who would choose to be outcasted and harassed for their entire life if they had the power to change it?
This brings me to the issue of homosexuals and the Christian church. I am ever so tired of hearing the same argument “Gays are evil, gays are going to hell, blah blah blah”. People like to use the bible as a crutch to justify homophobic thoughts and behaviors and it really needs to stop. In my opinion, doing such a thing takes away from the legitimacy of the religion overall.
The most ignorant statement in the WORLD to me is “I hope I don’t turn gay/I hope I don’t catch gay”. What does that mean and where did you get idea that people TURN gay. People do NOT turn gay and it isn’t a disease to be caught. I drives me absolutely insane when people spew pure ignorance from their mouths and when you ask them to back it up they say “because it’s wrong”. If you can’t explain to me why it’s “wrong” without bringing up religion, then just don’t share your opinion.
Finally, I have never met a straight person who claims that they weren’t born that way (unless they’re a religion freak that claims to have gone through an exorcism to cast out the evil gay demon in them «example of pure ignorance/stupidity) so why would a straight person assume that the gays weren’t born that way?
I have an idea. I think we could all use a little sensitivity training. People really don’t seem to understand that calling someone a “fag” is no more acceptable than calling me a nigger. SO, since I believe revolution begins small, I am planning on proposing an idea to the faculty at my high school this upcoming school year. I would like compose an assembly explaining the negative impact of derogatory terms (ex: fag, retard, nigger, spic etc.). After said assembly I would like those who were affected by it so sign a “NO HATE” pledge. By signing this pledge you are agreeing to stop using hateful labels to describe people in our lives. Also, I would like to dedicate a wall at the school to the “NO HATE” pledge and have everyone who accepts the pledge put their hand print on the wall. Regardless of your personal beliefs, this pledge would make everyone more comfortable at school. Let’s start with our community, but ultimately change the world, yes?
